ASIC - Australian Securities and Investments Commission
EDGE Credentials and Multiple Service Providers
ASIC's EDGE system has a limitation where a single set of EDGE credentials (username and password) cannot be shared across multiple software service providers simultaneously. This is a constraint of the ASIC platform itself - not something Business API can work around.
If you are already using another provider (such as BGL or a similar platform) with your existing EDGE username, you cannot use those same credentials with Business API. ASIC's system operates similarly to a POP email protocol: when a lodgement is submitted, the acknowledgement or response may be delivered to whichever system is actively polling with those credentials - meaning confirmations could be received by the other provider rather than Business API, or vice versa.
Solution: Apply for a Second ASIC Agent Number
To use Business API alongside another provider, you need to apply to ASIC for a second agent number. ASIC will issue a separate set of credentials for that agent number, giving each provider its own independent credentials.
Important: The two agent numbers are completely independent. Companies registered or managed under one agent number will not be visible under the other. For the purpose of registering new companies through Business API, this is not an issue - you would use one agent number for managing your existing companies, and a separate agent number exclusively with Business API for company registrations.
In summary:
- One agent number used with your existing provider to manage your current companies.
- A second agent number used exclusively with Business API for new company registrations (and other ASIC lodgements via our platform).
- Each agent number has its own isolated view of companies - there is no cross-visibility between the two.
To apply for an additional agent number, contact ASIC directly. Note that ASIC requires a separate postal address for each agent number - you will need to provide a different postal address when applying for the second agent number. Once issued, provide the new EDGE credentials (username and password) to Business API during onboarding - not the credentials tied to your existing provider. See Onboarding Requirements for details on what credentials to supply.
